LA TORRE

Rising Rent Sparks Resistance Against Gentrification in Puerto Rico

In 2023, La Torre condominium in the Río Pierdas region of Puerto Rico saw a shift in ownership, with affluent investors acquiring multiple properties in the area. As a consequence of this change, tenants received notifications disclosing a substantial increase in rent, totaling $300. This sudden surge has prompted residents to unite in opposition against the unwelcome prospect of eviction and the expanding reach of gentrification in Puerto Rico. The community's collective efforts signify a growing resistance to the forces of change that threaten to alter the fabric of their neighborhood.

Thankful and inspired by the work of Elliott Ray Lassi and Jorly Flores in helping organize the tenants in the building and even more thankful to them for letting me help tell their story. This production was really a great example for using Media as First Respoders when advocating for communites. We were able to shoot in 1-2 days in order to get this story out to the Diaspora and see what has been happening i n Puerto Rico for years.
